Ulthurai servants of Lord Vishnumaya-Kidanggor Devasthanam
The Origin and Legacy of Sri Kidangoor Mariamman Vishnumaya Devasthanam
Around 100 years ago, in the month of Kumbham, 1160 Kollavarsham (Malayalam Era), Shri
Velappan Chettiyar of the Areswaram family (Punathikudy) in the Kidangoor region of
Angamaly, Ernakulum district, brought a divine idol (Thidambu) of Goddess Mariamman (Sri
Parvathi) from the sacred Madurai Meenakshi Temple. With sincere devotion and powerful
spiritual invocation, he consecrated the idol and built a temple in his native place, Kidangoor.
The entire consecration rituals were conducted based on the divine revelations and spiritual insights received by Shri Velappan Chettiyar through his dedicated worship practices.
The temple soon flourished with daily rituals and offerings, becoming a place of spiritual refuge and divine grace. Following Shri Velayudhan Chettiyar’s demise, his elder son, Shri Brahmanandan Pillai, took over the responsibilities of managing the temple with utmost care and devotion. He was ably supported by his eldest son, Shri Sivadas Swami, whose unwavering commitment to the temple’s spiritual duties was widely admired.
During one of his deep spiritual practices, Shri Sivadas Swami received a divine revelation: to further enhance the family’s spiritual prosperity and regional well-being, the divine presence of Lord Ponnunni Vishnumaya was to be invoked and established in the temple. Acting on this vision, he approached the Namboodiri from the renowned Kattumadam Mana, one among the six sacred Namboodiri Brahmin families in Kerala believed to be blessed by Lord Parashurama himself. He met the then head of the family, Shri Manyan Namboothirippad, and conveyed the details of the divine message he had received.
Moved by the sincerity and divine call, Shri Manyan Namboothirippad wholeheartedly accepted the request. He performed the necessary tantric and Vedic rituals to invoke the energy of Lord Vishnumaya into a consecrated idol and handed it over to Shri Sivadas Swami. The idol, embodying the divine power of Lord Vishnumaya, was installed beside the original idol of Sri Mariamman Devi following all prescribed rituals and traditions.
From that moment onwards, Lord Ponnunni Vishnumaya began to bless every devotee who visited the temple, providing solace, resolving personal and familial hardships, and removing hidden fears and dangers. Through divine messages, the Lord conveyed that all those who came to him—irrespective of caste, creed, or religion—were dear to him and would be equally blessed.
The family of Shri Sivadas Swami continues to carry out all rituals and offerings with unwavering devotion and purity, maintaining the sacred traditions of worship without compromise. The temple functions under the name Sri Kidangoor Mariamman Vishnumaya Devasthanam, upholding the same traditional Brahminical ritualistic practices as followed in Kattumadam Mana.
After the passing of Shri Sivadas Swami, his brothers, Shri Vinayaka Swami and Shri Murukan Swami, have continued the legacy of worship and rituals with the same dedication and reverence.
